McCrory's 'tough' money in 1973 was also pretty good money

Posted — Updated“I used to lay down pavement here in Greenville in 1973 for $2.80 an hour. This is bringing back some tough memories of earning every dollar I made,” Gov. Pat McCrory, said during a news conference in Greenville, as he inspected the local 10th Street Connector.
While $2.80 an hour may not seem like much today, back in 1973 it was pretty good money -- 75 percent more than the $1.60 federal minimum wage and 93 percent greater than the $1.45 North Carolina minimum wage. Today, McCrory’s $2.80 an hour is the equivalent of $15.58 – more than double the state’s current $7.25-an-hour minimum wage.
