Monday, Oct. 16, 2017 -- While the NCAA report closes a chapter in the "paper course" saga, there are a lot of people, students, faculty, fans and supporters, counting on Chancellor Carol Folt and her administration to restore the public trust and regain UNC's cherished academic reputation.

- Editorial: Legislative leaders seek to turn N.C. into Banana Republic
Friday, Oct. 6, 2017 -- There are regimes in the world that cancel elections. They are derisively called Banana Republics, run by juntas whose strongman rulers aren't quite sure they've rigged the voting to come out in their favor. Unfortunately we don't have to look beyond our borders - or even our state - to see this kind of undemocratic behavior.
- Editorial: N.C. school budget's defects emerge as students settle in
Tuesday, Sept. 19, 2017 -- After passing the budget, legislative leaders were unrestrained in heaping praise on themselves for their "support" of public education. Even some education leaders thanked the Jones Street crowd profusely. But with the new school year well under way, the self-congratulations have yielded to disappointment, angst and turmoil. Local schools are worried there won't be money to pay teachers next school year, a principal pay plan may actually leave many with pay cuts and make it harder to get good principals into the schools with the most need. And the UNC Board of Governors is being rightly-criticized for micromanagement amid concerns over potential conflicts of interest.
- Editorial: Burr and Tillis stop fighting Obama, fix Obamacare
Tuesday, Sept. 26, 2017 -- For the last seven years Senators Richard Burr and Thom Tillis have been in the forefront of the fruitless effort to abolish Obamacare. Sens.Tillis, Burr and the N.C. congressional delegation should work on improving Obamacare's shortcomings -- and end the subterfuge and political wheeling-dealing.
- Editorial: Nancy McFarlane for Raleigh mayor
Wednesday, Oct. 4, 2017 -- It is important to reaffirm Raleigh Mayor Nancy McFarlane's leadership and the direction Raleigh's headed. McFarlane and her administration have shown a critical ability to bring diverse communities, interests and political viewpoints together to work toward common goals.
- Editorial: Tillis' 'transformed' North Carolina is rosy fantasy
Tuesday, Oct. 10, 2017 -- Sen. Thom Tillis' "analysis" in the Wall Street Journal was big on sweeping declarations and short on specifics. Who can blame him for painting over the details of reality with the broad brush of generalizations?
