ZEBULON, N.C. — A 34-year-old Zebulon man is facing charges after, police say, he broke in to a woman's apartment Monday morning, threatened her with a large hunting knife, tied her up and sexually assaulted her.

Michael Allyn Gall, of 251 Yellow Belle Court, was taken to WakeMed for a psychological evaluation. After his release, he will be charged with first-degree kidnapping, first-degree rape, first-degree forcible sex offense and breaking and entering, police said.

The alleged assault happened before 8 a.m., after which Gall untied the victim and escaped through a back door. His car was later found on Mallie Pearce Road in rural Franklin County.

After a four-hour manhunt in a wooded, swampy area near the car, authorities found Gall, who was taken into custody after a short struggle around 1:30 p.m.

Police said Gall tried to cut his own throat and slit his wrists, but he only suffered minor injuries.

Gall and the victim knew each other, police said.
