ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. — A World War II veteran who took part in a Flight of Honor last fall died this week.

Hugh Gaither Shearin, of Rocky Mount, died on Monday at age 86.

Last October, Shearin was one of about 100 World War II veterans who took a daylong tour of the WWII memorial in Washington, D.C., thanks to the nonprofit Triangle Flight of Honor.
