Wrightsville Beach voters to decide fate of beach smoking ban
Voters in Wrightsville Beach will decide in November whether to become the first North Carolina town to ban smoking on the beach.
Posted — UpdatedThe town's Board of Alderman voted unanimously on Thursday to place the issue on the ballot after a resident-led petition to ban smoking at the beach was approved by the New Hanover County Board of Elections in May. The board had voted down a similar ban in March, prompting the petition drive.
The ordinance bans smoking in the sand, but not in the town. Local leaders say the ban will only affect a small strip of city owned land and would not extend to state-owned beaches.
If the ban passes, beach smokers could be fined $250.
