Capitol Broadcasting Company's New Media Group is rolling out a new version of its popular WRAL Weather app Thursday, adding location-based alerting for severe weather and improved navigation and design.

The free app, which runs on iOS and Android devices, has an alternative design that is optimized for tablets.

Other new features include:

  • New layers of data and information in the iControl radar, including lightning strikes and radar data from DualDoppler5000 and the live Fayetteville Doppler radar
  • Current conditions from the nearest National Weather Service office by tapping any location on the map
  • Customizable push alerts based on a user's current and saved locations (visit Alert Center/Preferences in the new app)
  • New hourly "slider" that lets users quickly preview the next 24 hours
  • Consistency of forecasts across various platforms -- TV, web and apps

As with the previous app, users can get the latest video forecast from the WRAL WeatherCenter, updated several times each day, and a live video stream from the DualDoppler 5000 and Fayetteville Doppler radars. The latest weather stories locally and nationally are available in the app, along with articles from the WRAL WeatherCenter team of six meteorologists and any active closings and delays.

Other features include the daily almanac of records and normal highs and lows, plus sunrise and sunset times. Click ReportIt to upload photos, videos or text reports for use on air and on our digital products.

For most users of the WRAL Weather app, the new version will automatically install. However, if you see outdated information, your app likely did not update and you will need to manually update the app by visiting the iTunes or Google Play app stores and searching "WRAL Weather".

The WRAL Weather app has been downloaded more than 200,000 times. WRAL partnered with radar and weather data provider Baron to develop the app. WRAL also has recently relaunched its flagship WRAL News app, as well as the WRALSportsFan and HighSchoolOT apps, all of which were created and are managed by Capitol Broadcasting Company's New Media Group. CBC is the parent company of WRAL.
