Women around the county on Wednesday posted pictures of themselves wearing pearls.

It's in support of the first female Vice President Kamala Harris.

"I've definitely seen the Chucks, the pearls, the pink. My sorors and I are wearing pink for the celebration," said Shonette Charles, a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Inc.

Charles is a member of the sorority, just like Harris. She said wearing pearls is what AKAs do.

Harris was wearing her pearls as she was sworn in as the first female and first Black and South Asian vice president.

Now, a Facebook group has encouraged women to wear pearls to celebrate the first female vice president.

"In general, women wear pearls, not only to be a sign of strength but a sign of elegance so I think that's where your pearls movement has kind of taken off because everyone is excited about Kamala Harris being our first vice president," said Charles.

The Facebook group has more than 430,000 followers.

"I'm literally speechless, but overjoyed at her being in the White House, and my daughter is a student at Howard University," said Charles.

Harris is a graduate of Howard University, a historically Black college where Alpha Kappa Alpha Inc. began in 1908.

Many women and little girls said they’re feeling the excitement as history is made.

Charles said she thinks wearing pearls will go past Inauguration Day.

"We will continue to wear them in support of our vice president," said Charles.
