DURHAM, N.C. — A Durham woman facing a felony animal cruelty charge for shooting a dog that mauled her 2-year-old child pleaded guilty this week to a lesser charge.

Tasheka Laquon Beatty said she killed the pit bull, named Moo Moo, on Jan. 11 after it bit her daughter in the mouth and then tried to attack the girl's father.

She called animal control the next day to have it picked up, but it was still alive, police said.

Beatty pleaded guilty Wednesday to a lesser charge of failing to tether an animal and was ordered to pay a $50 fine and $133 in court costs.

Beatty's daughter recovered from the attack.
