Woman shot in Clayton parking lot
A Columbus County woman was shot with a handgun in a vehicle in a parking lot near U.S. Highway 70 in Clayton Friday evening, police said Sunday.
Posted — UpdatedOther occupants of the vehicle drove the woman to Johnston Medical Center in Clayton around 7 p.m., police said. She was transferred to WakeMed in Raleigh. Her name has been temporarily withheld.
Police said they believe the woman and her companions, who are all from out of town, "had an encounter" with one or more people about illegal, controlled substances just before the shooting.
Investigators had trouble piecing together where the shooting occurred because of contradictory statements from the witnesses, police said.
Detectives were seeking one person for questioning Sunday.
