Woman, 67, killed in Holly Springs house fire

Emergency crews responded to the home, which is in a neighborhood near Holly Springs Road, at about 11 p.m.

According to family members, Sylvia Hinton was trying to get out of the home. Hinton's daughter, Toni Bradshaw said she found her mother in a hallway of the home with her purse and medications.

"We're used to texting all the time and talking everyday," Bradshaw said. "It's going to be hard."

Neighbors tried unsuccessfully to extinguish the fire and rescue Hinton from the home, officials said.

Investigators say an overloaded electrical outlet in a bedroom caused the fire. A recently-purchased space heater was plugged into the outlet and may have contributed to the overloading, according to Holly Springs Fire Chief LeRoy Smith.

Firefighters found no sign of a smoke detector inside the home. Weather-permitting, Holly Springs firefighters plan to go door-to-door in the neighborhood Monday between 10 and 11 a.m. to offer smoke detector checks. They will install new detectors free of charge in homes without one.
