FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — A Fayetteville woman was charged with voluntary manslaughter Wednesday in the weekend shooting death of 23-year-old Jerry Dale Martin Jr.

Gracie Ramirez, 34, surrendered to authorities at the Cumberland County jail and was later turned over to military officials. She has been in the Army for more than a decade, served two tours in Afghanistan and one in Iraq.

Family members say Martin was horsing around with his mother and others outside in the 1500 block of Mawood Avenue shortly before 8:30 p.m. Saturday when Ramirez misinterpreted the tussle and, thinking she was breaking up a fight, shot him.

He was taken to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center, where he died.
