SANFORD, N.C. — A 20-year-old woman was killed Tuesday night after she fell from a boat trailer and was then hit by it.

The North Carolina State Highway Patrol said Allison Bennett was riding in a boat trailer behind a truck at about 10 p.m. near Buffalo Lakes in Harnett County when the driver of the truck, Anthony James Pontano, 29, ran off the road and overcorrected.

Bennett fell out of the boat and was then struck by the trailer, troopers said. She was taken to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center where she later died.

Investigators said alcohol was a factor in the crash and charges are pending.

Pantano, a Special Forces soldier, ran from the scene but an active search is not underway, authorities said Wednesday.

No additional information was immediately available.
