Overnight temps dip below freezing, cold and dry end to the weekend

“Overnight a freeze warming will go into effect and will last until 9 a.m. tomorrow morning. Expect low temperatures anywhere from 25 to 32 degrees, so a cold start to our Sunday,” said WRAL meteorologist Aimee Wilmoth.

"(A) hard freeze looks likely, so I would go ahead and plan to bring in the plants," WRAL meteorologist Nate Johnson said. "We have maybe just enough of a breeze to keep it from really tanking out in terms of the temperatures tonight, but it's going to be cold enough that you want to bring the plants in anyway.

"Make sure your pets have a good, warm place to sleep tonight, too." Johnson said.

Sunday morning will be chilly around the area, too. Plenty of sunshine through the morning hours will eventually give way to some cloud cover in the south and west, Johnson said.

More clouds and some rain will work its way into the area on Sunday night and into Monday morning, though it likely won't do away with the drought-like conditions helping to fuel wildfires in the mountains.

"(It's) not necessarily substantial rain, but we'll take whatever we can get," Johnson said.
