Wilson County man arrested after standoff

Wilson County sheriff's deputies arrested Charles Michael Sasser, 22, at 9110 Donna Court in Kenly.

Deputies said they were responding to a call from Sasser's mother, Diane Mann, who said her son had thrown his infant's car seat out of the back door of the home and fired a gun at it, saying that he would not leave the residence alive. 

Mann told authorities that Sasser said he would shoot himself before going to jail. She said he had his girlfriend, Victoria Lafay Reaume, and their infant locked in the house and would not let them out.

Mann said there were several weapons inside the house and Sasser had destroyed the inside of the home. 

Authorities ordered Sasser to come out of the home. After a brief standoff, Sasser exited the home and surrendered the infant. 

Sasser was charged with discharging a weapon into an occupied dwelling, injury to personal property and damage to real property. He was being held under a $25,000 bond in the Wilson County jail on Thursday. His next court date is Friday. 

The infant, who was not injured during the standoff, was placed in the custody of the Department of Social Services.

Sasser has previous convictions of felony malicious conduct by a prisoner, assault on a female, larceny and driving while impaired, according to state Department of Correction records.
