Wilson County detention officer fired after DWI arrest
A six-year veteran of the Wilson County Sheriff's Office was fired on the Fourth of July after being arrested for driving under the influence, Sheriff Calvin Woodard Jr. confirmed Tuesday.

Carles Fred Callahan, of 7312 Sadie Road, Kenly, is charged with driving while impaired, unsafe lane change and civil revocation of a driver's license.
According to a wreck report, Callahan was driving his personal car early Saturday when he went off the road while going through an intersection on Hines Street in Wilson. Callahan hit a fence and also hit two parked mail carrier vehicles that were in the United States Postal Service location on Mercer Street.
Callahan was fired before being charged, Woodard said Tuesday. He has been a detention officer at the Wilson County jail, where he was a sergeant, since 2009.
"Mr. Callahan was dismissed from the Wilson County Sheriff's Office. The incident that he was involved in displayed total disregard to the law enforcement profession and it will not be tolerated by this office," Woodard said in a statement. "I do, however, hope that once Mr. Callahan's disposition is determined that he can move forward with his life."
