Wilmington man sent to prison for tax fraud
A judge sentenced a Wilmington man Friday to a year and a day in prison after he pled guilty to tax fraud and ordered him to pay $207,222 in restitution.

According to a grand jury indictment, Mark Kenneth Smith, 41 reported his 2001 earnings as $47,473.12 and failed to return a W-2 form. A criminal investigation by the Internal Revenue Service found that he earned over $248,000 that year.
"Those that fail to provide honest annual tax returns increase the burden and responsibility on those who honestly comply with federal laws. Prosecutions and sentences as in this case, promote respect for and compliance with our tax system," U.S. Attorney George Holding said.
"It is important that honest, taxpaying citizens know that (the IRS) is working diligently to ensure they are not bearing the burden of someone else's tax liability," Jeannine A. Hammett, IRS special agent-in-charge, said.
