Weekly Wrap: Election held hostage, Day 24
The long and winding road to declaring a winner in the governor's race went through a few more twists this week.
Posted — UpdatedThe State Board of Elections ordered Durham County elections officials to recount more than 90,000 ballots that were reported late on Election Night because of technical problems. Gov. Pat McCrory's campaign had lobbied hard for the recount, saying the vote totals – the late surge pushed Democratic Attorney General Roy Cooper into the lead over McCrory – couldn't be trusted.
Durham officials must complete the recount by Monday night, although they have asked for a couple of extra days. The state board has set Dec. 9 for the statewide canvass to certify all North Carolina election results.
Meanwhile, more elections could be coming next year, after a panel of federal judges ordered the General Assembly to redraw legislative districts by March 15 and run in them in 2017 instead of waiting until the 2018 elections. The court had earlier declared a couple dozen state House and state Senate districts unconstitutional because lawmakers crammed too many black voters into them.
