SMITHFIELD, N.C. — Drivers traveling eastbound on U.S. Highway 70 in Johnston County could face a longer commute this week.

Two eastbound lanes of U.S. 70 will close alternately beginning Monday, Sept. 12, for around one week while the North Carolina Department of Transportation upgrades 4.7 miles of the roadway to interstate standards. Officials said the closures will be in place 24/7, but evening commuters will be most impacted.

According to the NCDOT, backups occur regularly at two traffic lights in Wilson’s Mills during morning and evening rush hours.

The project will replace two stoplights at Swift Creek and Wilson’s Mills roads into interchanges with bridges, ramps and loops.

Since one lane will always remain open, there is no detour, but commuters should expect some delays. Drivers were asked to use caution when traveling through the work zone, where the speed limit is 55 mph.

The work is expected to be complete by Monday, Sept. 19, when both eastbound lanes will reopen.
