Happy weekend! Here’s what’s happening on the family fun front. As always, check WRAL.com’s Out & About calendar and our #100thingsWRAL list of summer fun.
Paperhand Puppet Intervention opens its 17th annual summer show at Forest Theatre in Chapel Hill. This massive production, featuring puppets of all sizes, performers and live music, will run there through Labor Day and then move to the N.C. Museum of Art.
“Star Wars: The Force Awakens” will be screened at the N.C. Museum of Art at 9 p.m., Friday and Saturday. Tickets are $6. It’s part of the museum’s summer outdoor movie series.
The Cary Theater in downtown Cary will show the opening ceremonies of the Olympic Games on the big screen starting at 7 p.m., Friday. Admission is free. The theater will show select live programming throughout the games, ending with the closing ceremonies on Aug. 21.
The Wake Forest Renaissance Centre for the Arts will host the 2016 Forest of Wake Storyfest from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m., Saturday. The day features renowned professional storytellers, along with workshops and family-friendly concerts. Best for ages 6 and up. Activities include an open mic session for young storytellers and their families. This year, there also will be a free storytelling hour for students with special needs and their families from 11 a.m. to noon. Otherwise, you’ll need tickets for the other events.
Triangle Parents of Multiples holds its consignment sale in north Raleigh on Saturday.
Northgate Mall has fitness programs for kids and teens on Saturday.
From 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday, Mordecai Historic Park will host a Kids Craft Day. Participants will have an opportunity to make historic toys and crafts and learn about their uses during the 1800s. It’s free. (Admission will be charged for tours of the historic buildings and rides on the historic trolley).
I guess we’re at the point of summer where we’re wrapping up summer reading programs. Durham County Library will celebrate the Summer Reading Finale at the Durham County Stadium from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m., Saturday. Activities will include a 1.5 Mile Fun Run/Walk, a 400M Kids Dash, kickboxing, games and more.
At 9 p.m., Sunday, Raleigh Little Theatre will show “Dreamgirls,” rated PG-13 as part of its Movies in the Garden series. Food trucks and a pre-show with the cast of “Memphis” start at 8 p.m. (Considering the movie, this one is probably best for older kids).
