Weekend Plans: Lazy Daze canceled, but other family events still on

Unfortunately Hurricane Irene has put a damper on weekend family fun. There are other events planned, but be sure to keep an eye on the skies before you head out.

UPDATE: I originally wrote "here's hoping Hurricane Irene doesn't put a damper on weekend plans." Unfortunately it has.

Cary's 35th annual Lazy Daze Arts & Crafts Festival, planned for Saturday, was canceled and will not be rescheduled this year. Click here for details on the decision.

There are other events scheduled this weekend. I'll update this post if I hear that others have been canceled or postponed. If you hear of events that have been canceled, please post in the comments. But here's what is planned right now:

Saturday is Kids Day at the Durham Bulls during the first game of a scheduled day/night doubleheader. It begins at noon, about an hour before the game at 1:05 p.m., at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park and ends with a post-game celebration at the University Kia dealership, which sits on the other side of the American Tobacco Complex's south parking deck. All kids ages 12 and under will receive a voucher for a free lunch, including hot dog, chips and soft drink. The first 500 kids will get a free Durham Bulls cap at the gates. Inside the gates, there will be a magic show, face painting and balloon animals. All inflatable games inside Wool E's World will be free for kids. There also will be a special edition of Pepsi Kids Run the Bases after the game. From 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., the post-game celebration at University Kia will feature free food, Wool E. Bull and a chance to win a 2012 Kia Sorento and more prizes.

UPDATE: This event was canceled. Meet the 2011 University of North Carolina football team during Meet the Heels starting at 5 p.m. Saturday at Kenan Stadium in Chapel Hill. A Carolina Kids Zone will feature inflatable games and other activities for kids until 7 p.m.

Burwell School Historic Site in Hillsborough will screen the G-rated "Toy Story," at 8:30 p.m. Friday. The family movie night is outside on the lawn of the historic site. Bring blankets, lawn chairs, picnic baskets and bug spray. (Just no alcoholic beverages). It's free. Popcorn and punch provided.

The ArtsCenter in Carrboro will have a free open house featuring its instructors. See free demonstrations of ceramics, jewelry making, stained glass, photo darkroom, belly dance, collage, digital arts and more. It's 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday. The ArtsCenter has a variety of programs for kids to adults.

Wake County's Harris Lake County Park's Parkapalooza is 10 a.m. to noon Saturday. Take a hayride up to Harris Lake's 60-acre Longleaf Pine Stand, cast a fishing line off the fishing pier and play games and activities that help you discover wildlife in the area.

On Friday, Triangle Town Center in north Raleigh holds its Kids Fest on Friday. The free event features inflatables, face painting and more. It's from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday.

Also on Friday, the very fun kids and family band Mommie will play at the Music on the Porch series at Mordecai Historic Park in downtown Raleigh. Mommie will be playing two sets. At last check, the first set will likely start around 6:15; the second around 8 p.m. Lots of room for kids to run around, dance and play. Food trucks usually stop by. Great fun. A donation of $5 per adult is requested. Check the Facebook page for updates and the latest information.

Dreamsports Center in Apex will hold a free open house from 12:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Sunday. Kids ages 10 and under can sample some of the center's classes. There also will be inflatables, arts and crafts, face painting and more.

And the Child Evangelism Fellowship will feature the 7th annual Children's Good News Spectacular from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at the N.C. State Fairgrounds in Raleigh. The event is entirely free and includes games, inflatables, snow cones, popcorn and more. The Child Evangelism Fellowship, its website says, is a "Bible-centered international fellowship of Christians dedicated to the task of winning boys and girls to Christ."
