Weekend Plans Father's Day Edition: Fables for Families, Lunch Money, StormFest, more

Here's another Father's Day event to add: The Whole Foods on Wade Avenue in Raleigh will give dads a free danish and juice or coffee from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., Saturday. Find the goodies at the store's Lifestyle Center (while supplies last).

And if you're looking to get outside with dad this weekend, check out our reviews of local parks and playgrounds and Triangle family destinations. Sadly, it looks like both the Carolina Mudcats and Durham Bulls are away.

Lunch Money returns to the Triangle with a concert at The ArtsCenter in Carrboro at 11 a.m., Saturday. We've been long-time fans of this South Carolina-based kindie band at my house. The music is fun, silly, happy music about everything from visiting the library to a cookie as big as your head. It was recently ranked No. 6 in Time Out NY's list of the top 25 best bands for kids. They'll be releasing a new album later this month. Tickets are $7 for kids and $9 for the general public. A family four pack is $28. Kids 2 and under are free. The concert is about an hour and best for preschoolers to elementary school aged kids. This will be a great show.

StormFest returns to the N.C. Museum of Natural Sciences and its new wing, the Nature Research Center, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday. The free event focuses on weather of all kinds, natural disasters and emergency response services. You can meet meteorologists from local news stations (including from WRAL-TV), learn how to prepare your family for severe weather and more. WRAL is sponsoring free showings of Tornado Alley in 3D. The popular movie is back at the museum for one day only. At 10 a.m. and 1 p.m., there's a story time for kids with stories about weather gone weird and some live animals. And there's a lot more. The Wolfpack Club, N.C. State's fundraising group for athletic scholarships and facility enhancements, will host a Junior Wolfpack Club Fun Night at Carter-Finley Stadium in Raleigh on Saturday. The evening for Junior Wolfpack Club members and their families, along with the general public, includes a variety of activities and a screening of Cars 2 on the field. The fun starts at 5:30 p.m. with games, jump houses, face painting and light concessions. Families should pack a picnic and blanket to watch the movie, which will start at 6:45 p.m. Tickets for Junior Wolfpack Club members and their parents are $5 per person. Non-members can purchase tickets for $8. Kids under 2 are free. The event is one of several held each year through the Junior Wolfpack Club, which allows young N.C. State fans free admission to home games for many of N.C. State's sports teams and more. The 8th annual Juneteenth Celebration, CCB Plaza in downtown Durham, is 3 p.m. to 10 p.m., Saturday, and features live music, food, activities for kids and more. A Children's Village includes games, face painting, crafts and other activities.

The Leonard Bearstein Orchestra, an 18-piece animatronic symphony orchestra of bears, returns to Northgate Mall in Durham on Saturday. The bears will be playing through July 16 at Northgate's Center Court. The 42-minute program of patriotic music runs continuously during mall hours, Maestro Leonard Bearstein, of course, conducts.

The 2012 Color Crazed Alpha and Omega 5K Run/Walk is Saturday at WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary. Registration ends Wednesday, but onsite registration may be available on Saturday. Either way, it will be something to see as runners enter through "color crazed" checkpoints and cross the finish line decorated in a variety of colors from head to toe.
