Wednesday Wrap: The Late Late Show
If you thought Tuesday's House session, which wrapped up around 11 p.m., was pushing it, the House played a game of Beat the Clock on Wednesday, trying to push as many bills as possible through floor votes before midnight so they could meet the crossover deadline.
Posted — UpdatedOne bill lawmakers didn't have to rush on was an omnibus gun bill that had its first committee vote on Tuesday morning. An appropriation was added to the measure by the House Rules Committee on Wednesday evening, exempting it from the deadline and giving lawmakers more time to work on it.
Among the dozens of bills the House did take up were several related to schools, from digital learning to teacher training; tracking excuses to get out of jury duty; and removing the cellphone numbers of law enforcement officers from public records.
Meanwhile, the Senate passed a measure making it a felony for a student 16 or older to assault a teacher more than once and a bill that would give more county tax money to charter schools.
Wednesday also marked the second anniversary of the "Moral Monday" protest movement. Several clergy members were arrested outside the Senate chamber in the afternoon, and a rally outside the building led to a raucous atmosphere in the atrium in the evening as the House reconvened for its night of work.
