Wednesday Wrap: Flag tag flap
Gov. Pat McCrory and Senate President Pro Tem Phil Berger are pointing at each other when it comes to who has the authority to stop issuing license plates bearing the image of the Confederate battle flag.
Posted — UpdatedIn the wake of a mass shooting by a white supremacist at a Charleston, S.C., church last week, McCrory said he wants to remove the flag from specialty plates issued to members of the Sons of Confederate Veterans. He says the General Assembly needs to clarify state law before that can happen, while Berger insists it's an administrative decision, not a legislative one.
Meanwhile, bills are moving through the legislature, except those with some controversy attached.
The House delayed a vote Wednesday on a proposal to redraw council districts in Greensboro and Trinity, while the Senate, for the second time this week, pushed back a vote on a measure to expand who could use cannabidiol oil to treat epilepsy.
With one week left until the start of the 2015-16 fiscal year, the state budget also is nowhere in sight, nor is any continuing resolution to keep state government running until the House and the Senate can agree on a spending plan.
The Senate did give final approval Wednesday to a bill that would allow for hunting with firearms on Sundays, except for between 9:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m., when most churches hold services. The bill now head to McCrory.
