Wind, flooding cause havoc in Roanoke Rapids

The area was one of the hardest hit by severe weather that quickly moved across North Carolina.

Some areas of the city experienced heavy flooding and trees down, particularly at the intersection of Zoo and Sam Powell Dairy roads, American Legion Road near N.C. Highway 48 as well as Machinery Road near N.C. 48.

The Save-A-Lot grocery store on Julian R. Allsbrook Highway was also damaged. Employees at the store said wind shook storefront windows and that the store sign was also damaged.

There were no reports of injury.

Parts of Roanoke Rapids received up to 5 inches of rain, WRAL Chief Meteorologist Greg Fishel said.

Parts of southeast Warren County saw up to 4 inches of rain, and some parts of Durham and areas west of Durham got up to 3 inches of rain.

More rain is on tap for the rest of the week, Fishel said.

"This could be the wettest week we've seen in quite sometime," he said, adding that some areas could see between 1 inch and 2 inches of rain before Friday.

A storm system moving into the state will also mean that high temperatures will reach the upper 80s and lower 90s – not as hot as Monday's 99-degree high at Raleigh-Durham International Airport, which was 10 degrees above normal.
