RALEIGH, N.C. — Temperatures at Raleigh-Durham International Airport hit 87 degrees on Tuesday – a record-breaking temperature for this time of year.

The previous record was set in 1962 when the high at RDU reached 85 degrees.

Tuesday night will be partly cloudy with lows in the upper 50s to near 60. Wednesday will be partly to mostly cloudy and not as warm. Showers are possible late Wednesday into early Thursday.

“As our next weather system approaches, we may see a sprinkle or light shower develop in spots, with a very slight chance of a thundershower,” WRAL meteorologist Elizabeth Gardner said. “Winds will switch to a northeasterly direction, and that will help to keep temperatures a bit cooler as well, with highs in the mid 70s north to low 80s south.”

Friday will be mostly sunny and cooler, and the weekend “looks beautiful,” according to Gardner.
