Storms bring strong winds, rain
A cold front and warm temperatures ignited showers and storms across central North Carolina on Tuesday. Some of the storms were strong with damaging winds.
Posted — UpdatedParts of Wayne County experienced downed trees, small hail and heavy rains, according to the county's emergency management office.
Downed trees were also reported in Hoke, Lee and Harnett counties.
More than 1,100 people were without power in Harnett County late Tuesday, according to Progress Energy. Moore County reported more than 500 outages and southern Wake County had 6,874 outages.
More scattered showers were likely overnight.
"This is the front that is finally going to break the heat wave," WRAL meteorologist Mike Maze said.
Highs for the rest of the week are expected to be in the 80s with morning lows in the upper 50s.
There is a slight chance of rain on Wednesday, but after that things really dry out, Maze said. The chance of rain doesn't return until next week.
