Triangle could get snow Tuesday

"You might think that once we hit March, we might not to have to talk about the snow thing," WRAL meteorologist Elizabeth Gardner said. "But we are expecting a rain-snow mix tomorrow (Tuesday)."

Monday saw highs in the 50s. Overnight, temperatures will dip into the low 30s, but are likely to stay above freezing.

From Tuesday through Wednesday morning, 2 to 3 inches of snow could fall across the Triangle, but it's the rate of snowfall that will determine if there's any accumulation.

Heavy snowfall will do more to cool temperatures, allowing snow to accumulate on both roads and the ground. If the snowfall is light to moderate, though, it might not even stick to grassy surfaces.

“We don’t expect this to be a high-impact storm here in the Triangle at all,” WRAL chief meteorologist Greg Fishel said.

The heaviest precipitation will fall east of the Triangle. "Along the Interstate 95 corridor could be the place that has most of the snow piling up, if we see it piling up at all," Gardner said.

WRAL meteorologist Mike Maze said road conditions should be fine, with the snow only expected to stick to grassy surfaces.

The precipitation will begin as rain late Tuesday morning. It will likely change over to a rain-snow mix during the afternoon, becoming all snow overnight. Snow showers and flurries will linger through Wednesday morning.

Temperatures will get into the high 30s or low 40s before the storm system arrives Tuesday. Overnight will see a low slightly below freezing overnight, and Wednesday will see a high around 45 degrees.
