Light snowfall possible overnight

"We have a little bit of possibly wintry activity later on tonight," WRAL meteorologist Mike Moss said. "It looks like it'll be a quickly passing event, with little or no accumulation for most of us."

An upper-level disturbance started to move in Sunday afternoon, bringing clouds and moisture with it. In the evening, the system started to produce some sprinkles and rain showers over central North Carolina but snow over western counties.

"Some of that could make its way into our area later tonight and early tomorrow in the form of some flurries and, perhaps, light snow showers in spots," Moss said.

The change-over to snow could happen overnight, and flurries could continue into mid-morning Monday.

"Most of the WRAL viewing area will see only a trace of snow,” WRAL meteorologist Kim Deaner said.

Overnight temperatures will drop into the mid to low 30s.

Any accumulation will be small, due to recent mild weather, air temperatures above freezing and the little moisture behind the weather system.

"Accumulating snow will likely be confined to the northwestern Piedmont, around the Triad area north and west," Moss said.

"For most of our viewing area, we're looking at anything from an unmeasurable trace to maybe a light coating in one or two spots," he added.

The upper-level disturbance will pass by quickly Monday, leaving behind increasing sunshine in the afternoon.
