Forecast: Warm and muggy

Heat index values could climb to 105. Partly to mostly sunny skies are also expected.

The record temperature for Monday is 102 degrees, set in 1952, while the record high for Tuesday is 103.

"Fair, warm (and) muggy" WRAL Meteorologist Greg Fishel said as he described the forecast for Monday evening with lows dipping into the 70s.

The hot days will also bring poor air quality. The state Division of Air Quality has warned of Code Orange conditions in the Triangle metropolitan area on both Monday and Tuesday.

Code Orange conditions mean air quality is likely to be unhealthy for sensitive groups – children, elderly, people active outdoors and those with respiratory ailments. Those people should avoid moderate exertion outdoors during the afternoon.

The air-quality warning covers Chatham, Durham, Franklin, Granville, Johnston, Orange, Person, Vance and Wake counties.

Code Yellow conditions – moderate air quality – were predicted for Fayetteville and Rocky Mount.

Sensitive groups include children and the elderly who are active outdoors, people who work outdoors and people who have respiratory ailments.

Tuesday's weather will be similar to Monday's, but an unsettled weather pattern should emerge and might produce thunderstorms overnight.

"There might be an isolated (rain) shower or thundershower in a few spots, but I don't think many (people) will see rain tomorrow," Fishel said.

The remainder of the workweek will be a little cooler, with highs in the mid- to upper 80s and a chance of showers.
