RALEIGH, N.C. — The National Weather Service has issued a freeze warning for nearly half of the state from 4 a.m. to 9 a.m. Thursday.

A freeze warning means sub-freezing temperatures are imminent or highly likely, according to the National Weather Service. These conditions will kill crops and other sensitive vegetation.

"I suspect after tonight that we won't see anymore of these freeze warnings, because the growing season will effectively be over at that point," said WRAL's Chief Meteorologist Greg Fishel.

Wednesday night is expected to be cold, with lows in the upper 20s. The record cold temperature for Nov. 8 is 20 degrees in 1967.

Clear skies and light winds early Thursday morning will likely result in temperatures falling below freezing for a few hours, according to the weather service. The mercury will struggle to climb much above 50 throughout the day. The normal high at this time of year is in the mid-60s.

Thursday night will be mostly clear with low temperatures near freezing. Highs will climb to near 60 by Sunday.
