RALEIGH, N.C. — The work week is kicking off to a rainy and occasionally stormy start in North Carolina, but toward the end of the week, pleasant, sunny weather will settle in.

Temperatures will stay cooler on Monday, with highs in the 60s north of the Triangle and in the 70s further south.

"We're going to have mostly cloudy to cloudy skies," WRAL meteorologist Mike Moss said.  "There will be off and on rain."

A thunderstorm is also possible south of the Triangle. Rain will likely continue on Tuesday.

"There's a warm front that's going to slowly lift to the north, and as it does, our rain chance will slowly increase," WRAL meteorologist Aimee Wilmoth said. "There's a chance of rain Monday and Tuesday."

The chances of rain will decline Monday afternoon before increasing again in the evening. Tuesday will see an even better shot at rain, up to nearly 90 percent in the Triangle.

On both days, there's a slim chance of thunderstorms, and any storms that do form could turn severe.

Tuesday will be slightly warmer than Monday, with the high rising to about 80 degrees in the Triangle.

The weather will start to turn on Thursday, leading to "a nice end to the week," Wilmoth said.

Wednesday will be dry but cloudy and warm, with a high around 82 degrees. Thursday and Friday will keep the warmth but ditch most of the clouds. A few showers could creep in next weekend.
