RALEIGH, N.C. — Sunday looks to be the most pleasant day of the next few, with lower humidity, temperatures in the mid 70s and mostly sunny skies, said WRAL meteorologist Mike Moss. It will be a drier relief after the heavy rain showers that washed through central and eastern North Carolina Saturday.

Some variable clouds are in the forecast and a few sprinkles could dampen counties to the south of the Triangle, but the weather will be nowhere near as volatile as that which sparked tornado warnings Saturday evening across Hoke, Moore, Montgomery, Richmond and Scotland counties.

"We do have up to our north and west a high-pressure area that should keep us dry today for the most part. There may be a slight chance of a sprinkle or shower down toward the South Carolina border late today, but for the most part, we'll see a mix of sunshine and fair weather clouds," Moss said.

A slow-moving frontal boundary brought rain and thunderstorms to central North Carolina for much of the day Saturday. For about two and a half hours, communities in the Sandhills saw heavy downpours, hail and the threat of tornadoes, but local emergency management officials said no damage or injuries resulted. By 7:05 p.m. Saturday, the rainfall and hail had subsided somewhat, and by 7:15 p.m. the warnings had all been canceled.

Sunday will offer a day of respite before the chance of storms returns for the early part of the work week. Monday brings a warm front and an increasing chance for rain as the day goes on. Tuesday temperatures will return to the 80s with the accompanying possibility for thunderstorms.
