Chance for rain to diminish during afternoon hours

Morning rain showers won't be quite as widespread during the afternoon hours Saturday, but an approaching cold front will keep the atmosphere unstable enough for showers to pop up until the evening hours.

RALEIGH, N.C. — Much of central North Carolina saw rain showers and isolated thunderstorms during the first half of the day Saturday as two upper level disturbances moving in from the south and west interacted with a frontal system moving in from the north.

Rain chances will stay in the forecast throughout the afternoon and early evening hours, but any precipitation will be widely scattered, WRAL meteorologist Mike Moss said.

Temperatures will climb into the mid-70s by 4 p.m. before falling back toward 50 overnight.

"We've got a lot of factors impacting our weather today and tonight," Moss said. "We'll have our best chances for rain showers during the morning, but there are no guarantees for dry weather this afternoon and evening."

Several Triangle area egg hunts scheduled for Saturday morning and early afternoon were postponed because of the rainy conditions. Pullen's Park hunt was moved from 11 a.m. Saturday to 5 p.m. Monday. For a complete list of postponements, visit the Go Ask Mom blog.

Skies will become variably cloudy during the evening hours Saturday, with temperatures falling into the low-to-mid 50s overnight. Sunday's high will be closer to normal as well, topping out around 70 degrees.

"High pressure will build in tonight after this cold front passes through, giving us cooler temperatures to close out the weekend," Moss said. "We'll warm up quickly for the start of next week."

High temperatures will climb into the 80s Monday and stay in the upper 70s Tuesday.
