Blustery Weather Headed to N.C.

The winter storm ripping across the Midwest is beginning to have an impact on the Triangle.

Ten flights out of Raleigh-Durham International Airport had been canceled by mid-morning Friday, and airport officials expected more delays and possible cancellations throughout the day.

RDU officials urged ticketed passengers to call their airlines to determine if their flights will be delayed or canceled.

A low-pressure system roared across the Great Plains Thursday, dumping snow from the Texas Panhandle to the Great Lakes. The system continued to move northeast Friday, but WRAL meteorologist Elizabeth Gardner said the front would bring gusty winds and lower temperatures to North Carolina this weekend.

"Wind is certainly going to be our major issue," Gardner said, noting gusts of 20 to 30 mph were expected in the Triangle Friday.

The front could also bring about a quarter-inch of rain to the region.

High temperatures have been in the 70s in recent days, but they will drop into the 50s over the weekend and into the 40s early next week, she said.

"We will be plenty cold on Saturday," she said. "Another blast of cold air is coming in here for Monday and Tuesday."

Lows over the weekend will be in the 40s, and temperatures will drop into the low 30s and upper 20s next week.
