Rain, thunderstorms, flakes all possible with approaching front

Partly cloudy conditions Friday will give way to mostly cloudy skies by late in the day Saturday as the next weather system that will impact the Triangle approaches.

Highs Friday and Saturday should climb into the low 60s across much of the area. 

By Saturday night, thunderstorms – some of which could be severe – will make their way into central North Carolina, Gardner said. 

"We're expecting a good bit of rain Saturday night into Sunday," she said. "We may even have some severe storms late Saturday night."

Lows Saturday night will stay in the mid-to-upper 40s thanks to the cloud cover. On Sunday, rain chances will continue with high temperatures around 50 degrees. 

"We're expecting a good bit of rain by Sunday," Gardner said. "This looks like it will be a big rainmaker for us – maybe as much as 1 inch of rain between Friday and Sunday night in some spots."

As temperatures fall into the mid-30s to near freezing Sunday night, some of the rain could even become snow overnight and early Monday.

"It's possible that some of this could turn frozen," Gardner said. "It could have some impact for us Monday morning."

Temperatures will climb back into the mid-50s Monday as clear skies return to the area.
