Weekend brings 'wild changes' in weather

Clouds will build in through the afternoon, and rain showers could make their way to the Triangle as early as Friday evening, potentially impacting the evening commute. Highs Friday will climb into the upper 50s to near 60. 

"It'll be really pleasant out there today, but clouds will build in later today," Gardner said. "It will be a fairly wet night tonight."

The frontal system will move north and south across North Carolina several times through the weekend, bringing  wild temperature fluctuations.

"The front will move northward as a warm front. It will stall. Then it will move southward as a cold front and stall. And then it will move northward as a warm front again," Gardner described.

The warm air ahead of the front arrives Saturday, when highs in some spots could come close to the 70-degree mark. 

"Depending on where the front is, you could see very different temperatures," she said. "That front will dip south of the Triangle late in the day Saturday, allowing the cooler air to stream in Sunday."

Highs Sunday will top out in the upper 40s to near 50. By Monday, the front will have moved north again, allowing the warm temperatures to return. Highs for the first day of the work week could reach 70 degrees again, Gardner said. 

"It's going to be a roller-coaster temperature ride," she said. "We'll have some showers throughout the weekend and first part of next week."

Skies will clear partially Tuesday and Wednesday, but highs will continue to run above normal, topping out in the low 60s both days.
