Chilly nights on tap for Triangle
Triangle homeless shelters are urging people to come indoors and children are hoping it will be warm and dry enough for trick-or-treating as overnight temperatures drop below freezing.
Posted — Updated"We've been lucky recently with some pretty good Halloweens where the weather has been cooperating really nicely," said WRAL meteorologist Kim Deaner. "It does appear (that on Monday), we may not be so lucky."
Sunday dawned clear and cold, with temperatures ranging from the upper 20s to the low 30s.
During the day, temperatures warmed up to the upper 50s, but they will slide back to at or below freezing overnight Sunday into Monday morning.
Homeless shelter staff said the cold arrived earlier than usual this year, so they're putting a extra effort into getting the word out.
"This year, it did sneak up on us a little bit early," said Haven Sink, spokeswoman for the Salvation Army of Wake County. "We're trying to make sure we let families know if they need a place to stay, especially women with children, our doors are open."
Directors said the Salvation Army's Wake County shelters are full, but they will find room if someone needs a place to stay.
Monday will also see a high in the upper 50s, and clouds will increase in the afternoon. There's a chance of late-day sprinkles or light showers.
On Halloween night, temperatures will dip to around 40 degrees, while a little patchy rain and showers could fall.
"You will need to bundle up," Deaner said.
The rest of the week will see daily highs in the 60s and overnight lows in the upper 30s to lower 40s.
Normal temperatures for this time of year range from the upper 60s for highs to the mid 40s for lows.
