The heat is on! Summer is not going out without a fight. With fall still weeks away, temperatures will climb into the 90s for the start of the work week. While 90s are not typical for mid September, we won’t even come close to breaking records at RDU this week. The record high for Sept. 14 is 96 set back in 1991, and Sept. 15 has a record high of 94 that occurred in 1956.
Why the heat? A strong surface high pressure is anchored over the Great Lakes region and it will dominate our forecast through the start of the work week. By Wednesday, a cold front will move into the area and cool things down a bit. Temperatures will drop back to levels more typical for this time of year.
Transitions from one season to another can be tricky here in central North Carolina. Those of you new to the area will find this to be true as we finish out 2009. I always use the North Carolina State Fair as a good example of this. The fair is always in mid October with average highs in the upper 60s and lower 70s.
Of course when we see typical October weather, it’s perfect for doing any outdoor activity. Those of you who have lived here for years know that we have seen some wacky weather for the fair. Looking back at record temperatures for this time of year shows day time highs as warm as upper 80s and day time highs as cold as upper 40s. We’ve had sleet, rain and sweltering heat for the fair but that never takes too much away from the fun.
One of the best things about living here North Carolina is the weather. We have four distinct seasons, so just about everyone can find a time of year and a type of weather that is a perfect fit. My favorite is spring. What is yours?
