Hi, I just purchased a home weather station and I was wondering if you could help me with setting the barometer? It says to set unit of measurement (mb or inHg) and the altitude. I live about 2 miles south of Roxboro. I am not sure what they mean by altitude. Thanks for any help.

MIKE MOSS SAYS:     Lacey,     I'm pretty sure what they mean by altitude is the elevation of your barometer above mean sea level. Just south of Roxboro, this would mainly be between about 600 and 700 feet. If you'd like to look up your own location more specifically on a topographic map, just type "topographic map server" into a web search, and you'll turn up some commercial sites that provide free access to searchable USGS topographic maps. From there, just search for Roxboro, NC, and then use the zoom and pan functions to move the map to show your location, and then read off an estimate of your elevation. As an example, I see a crossroads south of Roxboro called Payne's Tavern, where the elevation is a little over 630 feet.
