RALEIGH, N.C. — The National Weather Service reported Wednesday that a damage survey in the Lemon Springs area of Lee County led meteorologists to conclude that a Tuesday night storm did not produce a tornado.
"The storm survey found straight-line wind damage with winds estimated around 60 mph," the weather service said in a statement. "No evidence of a tornado was found from the survey."
A large pecan tree that fell on a house on Olivia Road, doing "considerable damage," officials said, but they added, "The damage was very consistent with straight-line wind damage."
The weather service did the survey because residents' reports and wind rotation seen on Doppler radar raised suspicions of a tornado.
