Wayne County authorities intercept haul of heroin bound for NC

GOLDSBORO, N.C. — Wayne County sheriff’s investigators said Friday that they intercepted 61 bricks of heroin that were destined for sale in North Carolina.

A three-month investigation by the sheriff’s office, the Greene County Sheriff’s Office and the federal Drug Enforcement Agency culminated in the arrest Thursday of Willie J. Barr Jr., 41, of the 900 block of Fourth Street in Goldsboro.

Investigators said they learned Barr was traveling to Newark, N.J., to buy a large quantity of heroin to bring back to North Carolina, where he allegedly would supply mid-level heroin dealers. Investigators said Barr was traveling back from New Jersey on Thursday when they coordinated a traffic stop to intercept him.

The amount of heroin is enough to supply 3,050 bags and is worth about $61,000, investigators said.

Barr was charged with trafficking heroin by possession, trafficking heroin by transportation, maintaining a vehicle for controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia. He was held on a $1 million secured bond.
