RALEIGH, N.C. — Powell Elementary School closed early Friday because a nearby water main break left the school without water, officials said.

A 6-inch main ruptured on Marlborough Road between Westchester and Remington roads, officials said.

Repairing the line meant cutting water service to Powell Elementary and a dozen other nearby customers, officials said.

The school dismissed at 11:45 a.m., and teachers called parents individually to get them to pick up their children early, officials said.
