WARRENTON, N.C. — Town commissioners fired Warrenton Police Chief John Younts late Friday, Mayor Walter Gardner said Monday.

Younts was suspended earlier Friday, and the Board of Commissioners voted unanimously in an emergency meeting to terminate his employment, Gardner said.

The mayor declined to elaborate on the reason for the dismissal.

Younts had been Warrenton's police chief since spring 2007.

Sgt. Goble Lane was named interim police chief.
