DURHAM, N.C. — Investigators have charged the roommate of a man found dead in his Durham home last week with murder, police said Tuesday.

Brian Lamont Davis, 40, was arrested in Columbia, S.C., in connection with the death of Charles Hinnant, 63, whose body was found Jan. 19.

Davis also faces charges of felony larceny, felony larceny of a motor vehicle, obtaining property by false pretense and possession of stolen goods.

Police have not provided a motive for the crime, but according to a search warrant affidavit filed last week, Hinnant's mother reported him missing Jan. 18, after she went to his home, at 3082-D Colony Road.

According to the warrant, Davis told Hinnant's mother that he was not home. When she returned the next day, Davis and Hinnant's 2001 Toyota Corolla were missing.

Police found no signs of forced entry, and when they went inside, Hinnant was dead in the kitchen with a wound to his head.

Authorities, however, have not said how he died.

It wasn't clear Tuesday afternoon when Davis would be returned to North Carolina.
