RALEIGH, N.C. — Walmart on New Bern Avenue in Raleigh was briefly evacuated Tuesday evening as authorities searched for four suspects who wrecked a stolen car and ran near the store.

Wake County Sheriff Donnie Harrison said a deputy tried to pull over the car on New Hope Road about 6 p.m. after it was traveling erratically. The driver did not stop, and a pursuit began.

The car, which was reported stolen Sunday, veered onto New Bern Avenue, Harrison said. That’s when four teenage occupants jumped out and ran.

The empty car continued into the eastbound lanes of New Bern Avenue, where it crashed into silver Honda Accord, Harrison said.

A man driving the Honda appeared to be unhurt.

Deputies began chasing the teens on foot. It was not clear whether any of the suspects entered the store, which is at the intersection of New Bern Avenue and New Hope Road.

The store was evacuated as deputies searched the area. Two of the suspects were quickly taken into custody. Deputies thought they had apprehended a third but released the man after determining he was the wrong person.

The remaining two suspects were described as a black female wearing khaki capri pants, a blue shirt and a Chicago Bulls hat, and a black male wearing a black shirt and blue jeans.

Walmart reopened about 7:30 p.m.
