GARNER, N.C. — Construction will begin Friday in Garner on the new WakeMed Garner Healthplex.

WakeMed is investing $17 million in the 50,000-square-foot hospital. The facility will house WakeMed's seventh emergency department and will serve as the base for WakeMed's medical helicopter services. The hospital will hire 150 full-time employees.

Garner Healthplex's 12-bed emergency department is expected to serve between 12,000 and 15,000 patients during its first year. The hospital will be off U.S. Highway 70 near Rand Road.

The project is expected to be completed by August 2013.
