Wake Tech moment of silence marks a week since Oregon shooting
Wake Technical Community College was one of many community colleges nationwide to join in a moment of silence Thursday to show solidarity and support for Umpqua Community College.
Posted — UpdatedMark Gibson, dean of student development at Wake Tech, said even though the shooting was 2,900 miles away, it felt very close to home.
"That could have easily been right here in Raleigh, North Carolina," he said.
Authorities say a gunman opened fire at Umpqua Community College on Oct. 1, killing nine before dying during an exchange of gunfire with officers. The shooter was later identified as 26-year-old Chris Harper Mercer.
"We want to operate in courage, and we are indeed our brother and our sister's keeper here at Wake Tech," Gibson said.
As the days pass, Lance Page, a student at Wake Tech, said he is grateful for the moment to remember the tragedy in Roseburg.
"I think people need to feel a sense of hope, even though it's looking pretty rough abroad and at home," Page said.
