Wake teachers to get more training next school year

Last year, the General Assembly added the days to the school calendar, requiring students to be in class for a total of 185 days.

The school system is among a number that the State Board of Education granted waivers to so that teachers can receive training on new academic standards.

The school system says the waiver will also save it about $1.4 million in transportation costs. It costs the district approximately $280,000 to operate school buses on a typical day.

That money, Superintendent Tony Tata said, can be used elsewhere.

“Every dollar that can be saved in areas like transportation is money that can be used to protect and strengthen our classrooms,” he said.
