Wake schools says majority of students live close
Eighty-six percent of Wake County Public School System students are assigned to a school within 5 miles of home, according to a new study by the district.

RALEIGH, N.C. — Eighty-six percent of Wake County Public School System students are assigned to a school within 5 miles of home, according to a new study by the district.
The study, based on the 2006-2007 school year, shows about 55 percent of students attended a school of their choice within 5 miles of their homes.
Overall, about 80 percent of all students in the school system live within 5 miles of their school.
In 2006-07, the most recent year for which numbers are available, there were 128,260 students enrolled in the school system. The number does not include special-needs students.
The maximum distance between a student’s home and assigned school was 14 miles.
The report is based on the distance directly from a student's home to the school and does not factor in the route traveled to get to school.
The results of the study were similar to a study conducted during the 2003-04 school year, in which 85.6 percent of students lived within 5 miles of their school.
The study comes at a time when parents are concerned about reassignment because of student population growth or diversity. Some arguments against reassignment have to do with concerns that travel time is too long.
