WAKE COUNTY, N.C. — The Wake County Board of Education is offering money to hire and retain school bus drivers.

The board voted Tuesday to keep a program begun last fall to offer cash incentives for drivers. Current transportation employees can make an extra $1,000 for good attendance. They can also earn $100 for referring someone who becomes a new driver.

District leaders said they are down more than 100 drivers and want to get the numbers up before the new school year starts. The incentive program has been effective, board members said.

If participation is high, the program could cost $1.1 million. Board members said the funding will come from savings accrued in the transportation department.
